Sarah Elizabeth Howell was the only child of Levi Howell and Sarah Margaret Luse, her mother died 4 months after she was born. Sarah's parents were born in Warren County, New Jersey but had settled in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania before she was born. Sarah appears to have spent some of her childhood living with relatives in Warren County, New Jersey. Her paternal grandparents were George Green Howell and Lydia Johnson of Warren County, New Jersey; her maternal grandparents were Aaron Luse and Elizabeth "Betsy" Read of Warren County, New Jersey. She married Andrew Jackson Coursen on 25 November 1858 in Frelinghuysen Township, Warren County, New Jersey. She and Andrew were second cousins once removed - her grandmother Betsy Read Luse and Andrew's mother Hannah Read were first cousins.
