=====
At age 14, Vera Mulford, the daughter of Arthur F. and Ella Stiff Mulford, was one of eight young women who died in the Imperial Powder Company explosion on Coal Creek Road just outside of Chehalis. When they died, only one of their graves was given a headstone. Vera was buried along with five of the others in an unmarked gravesite surrounded by a foot-wide concrete border. Over time the cemetery was left abandoned and overgrown by trees and thick brush and these young women became known simply as "The Girls". With the efforts of a new owner, the cemetery has been restored in recent years. After extensive research and with community support, on the 100th anniversary of their tragic deaths, a permanent memorial marker was dedicated to these young women that they would never again be forgotten.
Note: The original concrete border continues to surround the gravesite.
