"I am Ed McCarthy, of Buxton, Maine, and the Washington DC area, USA. My grandmother was Alice Chatfield McCarthy, born in April 1878 in Nutbourne, Pulborough, West Sussex, England. She emigrated with her parents and older brother Charles in 1885; they settled in Newark, New Jersey, where I grew up.
My great grandfather and apparently his father before him ran a pub or "beer house" called The Rising Sun in Nutbourne which still exists (as of 1995). I have traced the line solidly back to Robert Chatfield and Mary Greenfield (or Greenfeild) in the late 18th century. Beyond that, my data is scattered but perhaps indicative. Nineteenth century intermarriages were with Heather, Street, Penfold, and Float (or Flote). I would be pleased to hear of possible connections of any generation."
