R. W. (Bob) Chatfield Dies

Funeral services for Roland W. (Bob) Chatfield, 62, former Woodburn resident who died June 9 at Nelscott, were conducted Saturday morning at the Portland Crematorium chapel. Rev. W. S. Van Meter of Woodburn officiated.

Mr. Chatfield, a retired auditor for the S.P.& S. railroad, was born in Bay City, Mich., March 21, 1887, and lived in Portland for many years. Winter before last he resided in Woodburn. In March, 1948, the Chatfields purchased a home at Nelscott where they lived until his death. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Hazel (Bitney) Chatfield, and a sister, Mrs. Ford Converse of Portland. He was a brother-in-law of Mrs. Henry Miller of Woodburn and Mrs. C. C. McCall of Salem.

Funeral services for Mrs. Hazel Bitney Converse, 65, of Portland were held Wednesday afternoon in Portland. Rev. Everett R. Hall of St. Mary's, Woodburn, conducted the services. Private interment will be at Belle Passi.

Mrs. Converse died of cancer Sunday night at the Good Samaritan hospital in Portland. She had been in the hospital just four months.

She was born in Sturgis, SD, January 27, 1894. In 1907 she came to Woodburn with her family, the L.M. Bitneys. She graduated from Woodburn high school in 1912, and from the Good Samaritan hospital in 1919.

Survivors include her husband, Ford Converse of Portland; sisters, Mrs. Mabel McCall of Salem and Mrs. Aletha Miller of Woodburn; and brother, Dewey Bitney of Albion, Mich. Included also are several nieces and nephews; Robert Miller of Woodburn, Mrs. Mayanna Seiler of Corvallis, Austin, Barbara and Dewey Bitney Jr. of Albion, Mich, Harry Grass III and Mrs. Geraldine Merrill of LaCrosse, Kan.

Mr. and Mrs. Dewey Bitney arrived by plane early Tuesday morning from Albion and will be here for three or four days.
