He is survived by his wife; five sons, James Jr. of Trego, Steven (Darlene) of Hertel, John of Webster, Ernie of Shell Lake, and Dean (Serena) of Spooner; four daughters, Bonnie (Jack) Moser of Webster, Connie (Terry) Smith of Trego, Helen Jean Mortensen of Spooner, and May Mortensen of Shell Lake; 19 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one brother, David of Sarona; and one sister, Rachel Gullickson of Shell Lake. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Lillian; three sisters; and two brothers. Lillian Gertrude Houts was born on 1 June 1932. She died on 29 December 1951 at the age of 19.
