Dear Cheryl,
I do not remember any of Uncle Chalie's relatives, except for a brother who visited him from time to time. I remember that both men were kind gentlemen. I loved my Uncle Charlie. My mother died when my sister and I were 6 and 4, and after my father remarried, we moved to Hasbrouck Heights. My uncle Charlie and aunt Ruthie moved to Wood-Ridge NJ. (next town).They had three boys Charlie (age approx.57), John (age approx.53) and Gary (age approx.49). We all attended the First Methodist Church of HH. Even though my step-mother was a very reserved person, Uncle Charlie and Aunt Ruthie made every effort to make her feel welcome. They invited us over their house many times. If I close my eyes, I can still see the layout. We had alot of fun times there. As I said, Uncle Charlie was a kind, warm, outgoing and generous spirited person. We grew apart I guess because my step-mother felt not too happy being with the sister of her husband's late wife. The Chatfields moved to Somerset NJ by 1970 and the last time I saw Uncle Charlie and Aunt Ruthie was at their home on the day their son Charlie got married (circa 1971).
I saw on the ancestry.com web page that I previously wrote about another name of John Chatfield e-mail name jchatfield@aol.com. This could be Uncle Charlie's second son. Have you ever written him? If he is not related to you, then I will write him to see if he is my cousin. Finding out something about Ruthie Heck and that particular Heck family has proven laborious and, at times, fruitless. This family is very mysterious...you know they existed, but it's almost impossible to find out anything about them...unless one wants to spend money through the on-line detective agencies. My sister Maureen can give you a lot more info about that I can. Some stories that I heard when growing up were that the Heck family girls lived in a beautiful home right near the Lindbergh home and that the houses were called "the mirrored mansions".
We also were told that Aunt Ruthie's father and his brothers ran the ticket department at Carnegie Hall and that during the 1930's and 1940's Eleanor Roosevelt would call them personally to book for shows she wanted to see when she was in the "city" NYC. My sister would love to help you and she has much more info. about the Heck family than I do. Please let me know about John Chatfield if he is a relative of yours or not.
