He was born to John and Alice on August 20, 1924, the 6th of 9 children. He was raised in the small town of his birth, McArthur, Ohio, but spent the Depression on a subsistence farm. After high school graduation, he chose to serve his country in WW II and proudly entered the Army 69th Infantry achieving the rank of Tech Sergeant in charge of supply. While stationed in Austria after Germany's defeat, George met his first love, Hilde, who became his bride in 1947. Back home in Ohio, George attended Ohio University in Athens, Ohio and welcomed a son, Peter. After graduation his 35 year career with the US Government began and a second son, Michael, was born. Job assignments and promotions moved his family first to Burlington, Massachusetts and finally Battle Creek, Michigan. Hilde passed away too soon in 1975. Then fun loving Gail Thunder and her three daughters came into his life and they spent many happy years together in their home on Fine Lake, Michigan and after retirement in Venice, Florida. Gail too passed away in 2001. George next met and married Nancy Reed Goodman and she survives him in Venice. George enjoyed playing basketball (he shot 2 handed set shots) and football (with leather helmets) in his youth and enjoyed RV travel, golf, sailing, and water skiing in retirement. He was a skilled handyman but most of all he loved to garden and was intensely proud of his roses. He fed wild birds and loved several dogs during his life. A long time member of the American Legion, Post 159, he proudly flew Old Glory daily. He belonged to Grace United Methodist Church and Venice Presbyterian Church. A gentlemen, nurturer and good and cherished friend to many, he was blessed with many triumphs and joys in his life. George was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Robert, Paul, Charles, Donald, James and Richard; and wives Hilde and Gail. Besides his wife, Nancy, he is survived by a brother, Gene (Nancy) Chatfield of Eaton, Ohio, a sister, Helen (Jack) Stephens of Penney Farms, Florida, and a sister in law, Barbara (John) Young of Naples, Florida; sons Peter (Candy) Chatfield of Lansing, Michigan and Michael Chatfield of Carmel, California; step daughters Debra (Chet) Cramer of Venice, FL, Wendy Nevins of Hastings, Michigan and Dawn Pointer of Las Vegas, Nevada; granddaughters Christa (Daniel) Chatfield, Amy (Josh) Chatfield, Jacklyn Nevins; and by numerous nieces and nephews and their families.
