Lewis had little money and no formal education, only what his mother could teach him. He worked for the Bread Loaf Inn in Ripton as a youth. The Bread Loaf Inn had a large stable and they bread Morgan horses. When he was about 19 years old he had saved enough money to buy 200 acres of land in Ripton on the road to South Lincoln. Lewis and Sarah lived in a rough wooden cabin that he built on the property. There are several pictures posted of that first rough cut wooden cabin he built as well a 2 pages entry from his diary listing the work on his home.

Lewis was a big man who continued to work hard on the farm into his 70's. Over the years he made a living potato farming, collecting maple syrup and some dairy farming.
By 1888 he had 500 acres in South Lincoln, down the valley a few miles north of his old log cabin. He purchased a house next to the river for Ada and his daughters. Lewis and Ada had four children together.

She was born 9 Nov 1858 and had four sisters. I found this information among the 90 page civil war widows pension materials of her mother Clarissa Durphey who was married to Prosper Durphey JR.
Prosper died in the Civil war and Clarissa remarried a man named Squire Gove. The pension has information on this marriage and gave her parents names. Do you need that information?

Sarah suffered from Dropsy (CHF, Congestive Heart Failure.) Bertha was 5 and Lucy only 2 when their mother died. Lewis had to go for help and he couldn't take the little girls down the rugged road. So, he barricaded the bedroom where Sarah's body lay. Then he killed a chicken, put it on the kitchen table and told the girls to pluck every feather off the chicken and that they were not to disturb their mother. While the girls were busy plucking the chicken Lewis walked a mile down the winding road to the Butterfield farm to get help. With their mother gone Lewis brought the girls to live with a neighbor until he remarried.
