He served in the USA Air Force during WW II and remained in service to our country for 22 years retiring in 1968. George had several careers after his retirement from the Air Force; he worked 24 years for the City of Abilene at the Grimes Water Treatment Plant, and over 10 years for H&R Block during tax season, he also did tax preparation out of his home for several years. George was a self taught wood craftsman and electrician. Survivors include his son, Bob Chatfield of Abilene; his daughter, Joyce Smith and husband Billy of Abilene; two sons from his first marriage, George Asa and Jim Chatfield of California; one sister, Regina Thomas of Easten, Maine; one brother, Russell Chatfield of Johnson, Vermont; brother-in-law, Art Claycomb of Clayton, New Mexico; 7 grandchildren, including, Randy Valdez, Jason Chatfield and Jaclynn Summers, 4 great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. George Washington Chatfield and Phyllis Marie Lockhart were married on 5 April 1958 in Oklahoma Co., Oklahoma, USA. Phyllis Marie Lockhart, daughter of Pearl Lockhart and Maude Mae Overton, was born on 19 December 1928 in Grenville, Union Co., New Mexico, USA. She died on 11 May 2009 at the age of 80 in Abilene, Taylor Co., Texas, USA. She was buried in Elmwood Memorial Park, South Abilene, Taylor Co., Texas, USA. Death Record Mrs. Chatfield was born on December 19, 1928 in Grenville, New Mexico one of 11 children born to Pearl Lockhart and Maude Mae Overton Lockhart. She grew up in the Clayton, New Mexico area and right out of high school became an elevator operator in Wichita, Kansas where she met her future husband, George Chatfield who was starting his career in the U.S. Air Force. In April of 1966, George was stationed at Dyess Air Force Base, and they have been residents of Abilene ever since. She had worked as a waitress at both the Tye Truck Stop and the Dixie Pig. Phyllis was a member of the Baker Heights Church of Christ. Phyllis's family have many fond memories of her dancing with them as children and always making everyone around her laugh at the quirky things she would say and do. She loved to yodel and even won a yodeling contest in her younger days. Survivors include her husband of 51 years, George Chatfield of Abilene; her son, Bob Chatfield of Abilene; her daughter, Joyce Smith and husband Billy of Abilene; grandson, Randy Valdez; brothers-in-law, Jim Duncan of Santé Fe, New Mexico and Russell Chatfield of Johnson, Vermont; sisters-in-law, Regina Thomas of Easton, Maine and Lucille Osborn of Rome, Georgia; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Ten siblings, her parents and two best friends, Annie Burks and Belle Perkins preceded her in death.
