Robert was born in Ludington, Michigan on November 22, 1947, the son of Anna (VanRiper) and Howard Chatfield. On November 27, 1970 he married Virginia Williams. Robert was a dedicated physician and family man, a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He had a passion for medicine, books, learning and nature, but above all, helping others. Later in his career, Robert was especially passionate about helping those with substance abuse problems. He was a kind and generous man, patient, compassionate, non-judgmental, and endlessly proud of his family. Robert is survived by his brother, Thomas, and sister, Sally; his ex-wife Virginia; children, Andrea, Ethan, Matthew, and Elizabeth; grandchildren, Clay, Alec, Addie, Ben, Gabriela, and Quinn; several nieces, nephews, and extended family; and his beloved dog Gabby.
