774. Silas Chatfield was born on 19 September 1782 in Sheffield, Berkshire Co., Massachusetts, USA. He died on 2 April 1866 at the age of 83 in Marengo, McHenry Co., Illinois, USA. He was buried in City Cmtry., Marengo, McHenry Co., Illinois, USA. Silas lived in Marengo, McHenry Co., Illinois, USA 1850/1860. In 1797, Silas Chatfield traveled to central New York with his family to claim his father's bounty land. Rachel Grover had arrived six years earlier with her family. When Silas met Rachel, a classic tale of 19th-century American pioneer life was set in motion. Married in 1802, their life journey would take them from New York and Ohio to Illinois where they raised a large family, ever striving to improve their lives, all the while participating in the advance of civilization across the country.

Listed on LDS Microfilm Page # 8,003 Batch Number 8505980. Silas was listed as living with S.P. Chatfield (I believe this to be Silas Porter) in the 1860 Census in McHenry County, Marengo Township, Illinois. His age is listed as 78 and his wife Rachel was also living at age 75. Birthplace is listed as New York
Silas and Rachel evidently removed to Illinois and lived with their son Silas Porter where they are recorded in the 1860 census. A picture of the grave marker located in the Marengo City Cemetery is in the possession of the author.
