George William Stacey III was born on February 3, 1925 in Glen Ferris, West Virginia, the only child of Arthur Edward Stacey and Pauline Ruth Murner. Following service in the USA Army in World War II, where he fought and was wounded in Italy, he returned to the USA to get a Bachelor's Degree and a Law Degree from the University of Virginia.
While at the University of Virginia Bill met Nancy Weeks Cofer of Norfolk, Virginia a student at Sweetbriar College. On September 13, 1947 they were married in Norfolk, Virginia and returned to Charlottesville, Virginia where Bill completed his studies and got a law degree from UVA.
While in law school, two of Bill and Nancy Stacey's three children were born, George William "Will" Stacey IV and Sarah Allen Stacey. Following law school, Bill and Nancy Stacey returned to Norfolk where Bill soon answered a calling to join the family business, Cofer's Inc. In 1953, Bill and Nancy's third child, Henry Chatfield Stacey was born, completing the Stacey family. Cofer's was sold in 1967 and Bill embarked on a new phase of his career; joining "Guest Quarters". Guest Quarters was one of the first "long term residential rental businesses" targeting the business market in relocations and long term assignment travelers.
Bill died on June 4, 1980 in Norfolk, Virginia. In addition to his wife, Nancy, Bill was survived by his three children and their spouses, Will Stacey (Kathleen), Sarah Stacey Potter (Jim), and Henry Stacey (Carol). Also surving were two grandchildren, George William Stacey V and Sarah Stephens Stacey; children of Will and Kathleen Stacey. Following cremation, Bill's ashes were scattered on the Chesapeake Bay on the Eastern Shore in Northampton County. In addition to being a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather, Bill was a true lover of the sea and sportsman.
