Seymour and Sarah Durham of Dubuque, Iowa. She was born in Massachusetts on Nov 14, 1831, and died in Dubuque on May 20, 1898. They were md in Seymour, CT and had their first child there in 1853. They removed to Iowa before the death of their 2nd child in 1855, as he is buried in the family plot at Asbury Cemetery in Dubuque. Beecher, 40, as he was called throughout his lifetime, was a veteran of the Civil War. He enlisted in the Union Army on Sep 17, 1861, and on Nov 27, 1861 he wrote a letter to his father-in-law, William Seymour, of Dubuque. In this letter (now held by the Dubuque Historical Society), written from Camp Benton, St. Louis, Missouri, he states that there was talk of drafting and he dreaded that so he enlisted. He also states, "I am a soldier in defense of my country. Lib was rather opposed to my coming but I considered it my duty to come whether it was or not I am not able to say. Time will determine that." He was, at this time, Sgt. of Company A of the 11th regiment under Col. A. M. Hare. His company received their baptism of fire at the battles of Pittsburgh Landing and Shiloh. Beecher, 40, was wounded severely in the leg at the Battle of Shiloh in Tennessee which took place April 6 & 7, 1862. He returned home to Wilton, Iowa for recuperation and when healed he again joined in the fighting. It is said by his descendants that his wife so opposed his going to war that she never forgave him. He like his father was a stone mason, and was well liked and respected by his friends, family and neighbors. Beecher was born Mar 5, 1828 in Oxford, CT. He died Jan 24, 1893 in the Soldiers Home in Marshalltown, Iowa, where he had been for about 2 months. The cause of his death was Bright's Disease, complicated by Dropsy. The term of his illness was 2 years. ----- Obit: Mr. Beecher Chatfield, a member of Hyde Clark Post, G.A.R. of this city died yesterday at the Soldiers Home at Marshalltown. I am trying to find where Solomon is buried. Thanks again for your help. Judie {~~~~~~ Olli M Chatfield Date: 12/13/2005 12:07:31 PM Central Standard Time From: jolwa16@sbcglobal.net - Judie Cheryl, I received a letter yesterday from a "meejain@aol.com, about this Olli M Chatfield. My husband is related to Olive M Cleveland, daughter to Moses Cleveland. Here is our story: We were back in Wisconsin in 2002 doing cemeteries, and took this picture of (the gravesite) Luther Wheeler, wife Henrietta Franklin, his Mom, Maria J Damon and her Mom Olli M Chatfield. I wondered about the Chatfield name and since then have been trying to find out about it. I called the cemetery, they said "They are probably daughters" ---- I said "No--they are the mothers." I have sent for death cert out of Wisconsin and the county, but nothing. I have a census from July 1870 that list Solomon, Olive and some children. But, everything else says Solomon died 4/1870 ---- and I have tried to find where he is buried, but can't. Since Solomon was from England, I thought maybe he went back --- and I found one, married Dec 1870 to a younger woman. I do not know if this is the same Solomon. And now your note arrives stating that this Olli married a Beecher Chatfield. Do you have any records as to when they married? The 1895 Iowa census states Olla was 68 --- that would be right. and birth place New York is right. Her birth date is 25 May 1828 out of Schroon, New York. As for this LuLu Franklin --- there is a Lula A, child of Solomon Lewis born 1879 and was in Outagamie, Wisconsin. Dates don't match -- and I have no idea who the Campbell was (for Olla's last name). The areas match, as that is where the Clevelands lived. Olive and Solomon had the following: Solomon Lewis, Henrietta, Tryphena, William, Julius, and Minnie. Moses ended up in the Soldiers Home in Wis. and buried in Woods National Cemetery out of Milwaukee. I am really excited about this information you have, so thanks. I will now look in Iowa for my Olive Marie. (Some of the papers call her Marie) If I can help you let me know. thanks again, Judie {~~~~~~ Cheryl, I looked at the info you sent yesterday, and this is my opinion of events. Olive is listed on the 1870 with Solomon Franklin in Wisconsin. Listed on the 1880 census with a Campbell, still in Wisconsin. Beechers Mother-in-law article 1888 list a daughter as Mrs. B Chatfield so my thoughts would be Beecher and Lib were still married Beecher died in 1893. Listed on the 1895 census as Beechers widow --in Iowa Listed on the 1900 census as a widow (Beecher) She died in 1906, buried in Wisconsin I would think between 1888 and 1893, Olive and Beecher were married. Quite interesting. But this keeps a person involved. later, Judie}
