In a way, we have New England to thank for the Buhrman-Pharr establishment, because all of the proprietors came from that region. Originally, Joseph L. Chatfield came into our area from his native New York. Chatfield was born in 1852 and learned of our area through railroad expansion which reached Texarkana in 1873-74. He married Agnes Bell and they had a son, Joseph E. Chatfield, born in 1885. Chatfield partnered with another newcomer to town, William J. Buhrman. Buhrman was born in 1857 in Connecticut and was married to Ida Joe, who was born in 1861 in Vermont. The Buhrman’s had a son, Willie D., who died in infancy. The Chatfield-Buhrman Hardware Company opened in 1879, serving our five-year old community with distinction as the town grew from rough timber buildings to graceful, multistoried, brick buildings all Hung Front and Broad Streets. The store was first located at 117 E. Broad Street, on the same side of the block where Watson’s Shoe Store Building is located now. Both Chatfield and Buhrman were known locally as being “men of character,” trustworthy, honest, and good neighbors, to boot. This business partnership lasted from 1879 to around 1905, when Joseph L. Chatfield opened a business listed as J.L. Chatfield Hardware Company, at 309 E. Broad Street. Here he partnered with his son, Joseph E. Chatfield, and the family lived at 321 Beech Street.
Burhman died in 1921 and his wife Ida, in 1937. Joseph L Chatfield, one of the original founders, lived to be nearly one hundred years old, dying in January 1952.

Ruth Hillis, a granddaughter of Agnes, told me that she was acting strangely and that her children took her to Memphis where one of them lived and put her in a mental hospital. Chatfield Sanders told me that he remembered his family going to see her there. I found a death certificate for her under Mrs. Joseph Chatfield. The only information that it had was that she died of a seizure.
