=====
Jesse Chatfield, son of Walter and Sophia, was the step son of Asa Bushnell. He was born in Newburg, Orange, New York about 1836. Asa's sister was Lydia Bushnell who married Heman Crandall. Lydia was Mary Maria's mother and Christopher Otho Chatfield's grandmother. She was also Ruey Keziah's mother and Mary Patrick's great grandmother.

Jesse was still living at home at the 1860 census. He is listed as J. C. age 24, born in New York. On 9 Aug 1861 he enlisted in the 39th IL, Co G. He was described as 5 ft 5 inches, gray eyes, dark hair, dark complexion, single and a farmer. His company was first sent to Fredrick, Maryland and then to the Shenandoah Valley, Virginia. Later they were with the Dept of the South in Hilton Head and Folly Island, South Carolina. In May 1864 they were again in Virginia and held the turnpike to Petersburg. Jesse was wounded in the hand 17 June 1864 in the battle of Weir Bottom Church. He received a medical discharge 10 Sept 1864. What he did the next few years is unknown.

Marina was a school teacher. They were married eight years before having children due to her poor health.

Jesse tried to get a disability pension because his hand kept him from doing manual labor. He was turned down several times. Finally they granted him one fourth disability which was $1.00 a month. He died 3 March 1885. In 1887 Marina was faced with foreclosure on a mortgage negotiated through Mess Jarvis Conklin & Co. She tried to get another loan to pay off the mortgage. The homestead also was mortgaged to Read's Bank and this debt also needed to be paid. There was no property in the estate that could be sold to pay debts except two horses. The homestead was tract of land N.W.1/4 of section 4, Twsp 33, Range 3 East, Cowley County.
