SYCAMORE TRUE REPUBLICAN Dec. 11, 1918
SUDDEN DEATH 0F MRS. J. R. CHATFIELD
DIED SOON AFTER
RETURNING FROM CHURCH FAIR.

MANY ATTENDED FUNERAL

Community Greatly Shocked By Unexpected Ending Of Life Of This Popular And Active Member for Many Years Of Sycamore Society.

The sudden death at about 10 o'clock on Friday night of Mrs. John Chatfield came as a great shock to this community. She had felt as well as usual that day, although she had suffered slightly for a few days of pains in her head, and attended the annual family and supper at the Universalist church that evening where she thoroughly enjoyed herself. Returning home, she retired and at about 10 o'clock she called her husband. Putting her hand to her head, she said she was very sick, and very soon became unconscious. A physician _had been called immediately, but she died in a few minutes. Her death was attributed to apoplexy.
Clarinda Phelps-Chatfeld was a daughter of Samuel and Dorcas (Campbell) Phelps who came from the vicinity of Syracuse, N. Y., among the first settlers of this vicinity, and were engaged for many years in farming.
The daughter was one of eleven children of her parents, and was born on the homestead farm southeast of Sycamore on Feb. 26, 1860. Here she grew to womanhood, and on October 1, 1879, was united in marriage to John R. Chatfield, only son of John and Julia (Holmes) Chatfield, also pioneers of this county.

John R. Chatfield was engaged for a number of years in the grocery business in Sycamore, and recently resumed active management of his large farm north of town, but Mr. and Mrs. Chatfield continued to occupy their pleasant home in this city.

To them were born a son and daughter: Leslie J. Chatfield was married to Miss Jennie Dee of Rochelle, and with their two children they make their home in that city; Ethel was married to Perry Fisk, and they make their home in DeKalb. On these loving children and the devoted husband this blow has fallen with crushing effect.

Mrs. Chatfield also leaves surviving two brothers and four sisters: Benjamin Phelps of Omaha, James Phelps of Rockford, a veteran of the Civil war; Mrs. Mary Ewing of Chanute, Kan., Mrs. Caroline Corser of Cherryva1e, Kan., Mrs. Sarah Ann Black of Arkansas City, Kan, and Mrs. Della Gordon of Cassopo1i, Mich. Two other sisters, Mrs. John Westlake of Sycamore and Mrs. Lyman Ewing of Lansing, Mich., are deceased.

Mrs. Chatfield was a member of the Universalist church and an active and useful member of the Ladies’ Aid society, the Rebekahs and the Royal Neighbors.

There was a very large attendance at the funeral services which were held in the Universalist church on Monday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, the pastor, Rev. G. H. Ashworth, officiating. The interment was in Elmwood cemetery.
