Joseph Holland Harrington related this story to his son Edward K Harrington, of when his sister Gustavia Aleene Harrington and her husband William Nathan Chatfield were in the Philippines: William was sent there for his work and was there when the Japanese invaded during WWII. Aleene was in the hospital with a heart attack at the time, unable to be transferred home because the doctor said she could not be moved.

When the Japanese invaded they were put under house arrest for several months until they were transferred to Santo Tomas College which was made into a prison camp in Manila in the Philippines. Each person had to stand in line to get their allotted one cup of rice per day. This was their entire allotment of food. They both became "skin and bones". Aleene was able to get some greens for her and her husband by going through the prison trash.

When the war was ending and the Americans were coming to their rescue, the Japanese put dynamite in all the rooms intending to blow up the prisoners, but the American commandos disconnected the explosives the night before it was set to explode and saved them. Amazingly, due to her sparse diet, Aleene's heart was fine when she got home.
