Each person had to stand in line to get their allotted one cup of rice per day. This was their entire allotment of food. They both became "skin and bones". Aleene was able to get some greens for her and her husband by going through the prison trash. When the war was ending and the Americans were coming to their rescue, the Japanese put dynamite in all the rooms intending to blow up the prisoners, but the American commandos disconnected the explosives the night before it was set to explode and saved them. Amazingly, due to her sparse diet, Aleene's heart was fine when she got home.
