(Before the Chief Justice and a Jury of four.) ACTION ABOUT SCRIP. Chatield v Blackman. Mr P. Halse Rogers, instructed bv Messrs Lambton and Milford, appeared for the plaintiff. The defendant did not appear. This was an action brought by Robert Percy Chatfield, accountant, against Emma May Blackman, for the return of certaln scrip certificates in the Grand Cccanyon Park Estate Ltd., and damages for their detention. Plaintiff's case was that, in August, 1913, the company referred to was formed and registered, plaintiff being managing director, and defendant becoming the holder of certain shares, and at various times he advanced her money to the total amount of £95. for which he received scrip as security. Certificates representing her shares were issued to defendant and in 1914 a proposal was made that plaintiff should buy the shares, pay defendant £100, and release her fiom all her liabilities to hlm. This proposal was accepted, and an agreement was drawn up and signed by the parties. Plaintiff paid defendant the £100 and afterwards sent the scrip to her husband to have the necessary transfer warrants made out, but though he had repeatedly demanded a return of the scrip, defendant had not handed them back. Plaintiff therefore sued for the return of the scrip or £100 damages for thelr detention. Verdict for the plaintiff, with damages £100, but to be reduced to 1s upon the scrip being returned to the plaintiff. ----- The Sydney Morning Herald,NSW : Wednesday 28 September 1921 N0. 1 JURY COURT. In an action in which Robert Percy Chatfield sued John Griffith Thomas, claiming £1000 compensation for breach of contract in connection with the supply of 100 tons of trocas shell, no defence was pleaded. (Before Mr. Acting Justice Maxwell and juries.) ALLEGED SLANDER. LIBEL ACTION Chatfield v Joyner Robert Percy Chatfield sued Frederick Joyner on a claim for £1000 for a libel. Mr J W Shand and Mr M F Loxton (Instructed by Mr Leo C Elliottt) appeared for the plaintiff and Mr Braddon (Instructed by Messrs Gill Oxlade and Clegg) for the defendant. The parties were members of the South African Soldiers Association and both were Interested in a cement company which was formed in 1924, the defendant having been appointed a director. More capital was required and an offer had been received but the matter had not been completed and the defendant became impatient. At the annual meeting of the South African Soldiers Association on July 19 last Mr Chatfield had been proposed and seconded to fill the position of president when the defendant was alleged to have arisen and said: "He is a scoundrel. He robbed me of £600 (referring to the sum defendant had invested In the cement company). This man Is a robber of widows and children." The plaintiff who Is a public accountant alleged that he had been greatly injured both in his credit and reputation. The further hearing was adjourned until next Thursday. ----- There are several other cases of a similar nature, presumably he acted as an accountant for clients.
