Somers Brass Company was founded in 1909 by the 3 brothers, Joseph E., Robert D., and Louis J. Somers. The mill's specialty was rolling incredibly thin gauge brass, which made it a unique operation in Waterbury, the Brass City. It was also the first specialty mill to produce nickel and nickel alloys in thin strip form and later became a pioneer in rolling stainless steel to thin gauges. In 1955 the company's name was changed to Somers Thin Strip and in 1967 it was acquired by the Brass Group of Olin Corporation. It has since been sold to another company but is still rolling thin strip metals on the same site, part of which was sold to the company in 1928 by Emogene Chatfield Somers.

"The father of the founders of the Somers Brass Company, Dwight L. Somers, son of David Somers, rolled metal in the Benedict & Burnham plant for 76 years, being absent only for his three-year service in the Civil War. He taught many men the trade of brass rolling and was such a skilled craftsman himself [that] he was sent home on furlough in order to assist in producing the metal required to make buttons for soldiers' uniforms."
