He moved to New York in 1796.

He was by trade a carpenter and joiner, and was a native of Litchfield, Connecticut and removed to Cayuga County, New York. He was a schoolteacher who came on horseback from Cayuga County, New York to Marcellus, New York.

He married his first wife in 1798 and she dying in 1799 married his second wife, Susanna Coy in 1800. They had a family of 10 children.

In May 1834, William together with his family emigrated from Marcellus, Onondaga, New York to Sharon Township, Medina Co. Ohio, via Erie Canal, Buffalo, Cleveland and overland, until they reached their destination. Mr. Chatfield first settled on the farm now owned by Guy C. Chatfield.

Susannah Coy, daughter of Joseph Coy and Jerusha Sawyer, was born on 5 May 1782 in Windham, Windham Co., Connecticut, USA. She appeared in the census in 1850 in Sharon Center, Medina Co., Ohio, USA.
