John was from the village of Killorglin in County Kerry, near the city of Trilee. He apparently sailed to the US in 1861 or 1862. His family was concerned about sending a young man alone to America, so a marriage was arranged with Mary Maroney. She was a widow with 2 children and was some years older. It was thought John became a Widow at the age of 29, but that is inconsistent with the date of Mary's death.
His trade in America was as a boot maker.
