Virgil E. Carlin, 83, of Durham, passed away Monday, Feb. 15, 2016, at Country Aire Retirement Estates in Lewistown.
He was born Aug. 1, 1932, in Williamstown, a son of Ray and Waneta Forquer Carlin. He married Rosemary Carlin on Dec. 30, 1978, in Memphis. She died July 20, 2010.
He was an Army veteran of the Korean War. He was a tugboat pilot and truck driver for many years. He was also a member and past commander of the American Legion Post No. 37 of Quincy, Ill.
Virgil loved to play with his dog, Tikki, and garden. He was also an avid reader and liked to whittle. Virgil was always there to lend a helping hand to all of his neighbors. He was a jack of all trades and could fix anything. Virgil was the neighborhood handyman and always carried a pair of pliers.
Survivors include his children, Roger Pruitt of Ferguson, Denise Sparks of Durham, Tammy (Steve Hudnut) Willing of Durham, Gene Hickman of Durham, Rose and Carl Trueblood of Memphis, Kevin and Roxanne Carlin of Canton, Pam and Roy Morss of Farmington, Iowa, Robert and Tammy Carlin of La Grange and Waneva Marriott of Maryville; two brothers, Larry (Arlene) Carlin of Kahoka and John (Brenda) Carlin of Hannibal; numerous grandchildren including Casi (Adam) Kethart, Heather (David) Mitchell, Ashley Pruitt, Mathew Pruitt, Amanda (Eddie) Helton, Dustin CHATFIELD, Tabitha Sparks, Kelsey Sparks, Adam Hickman, Leerona Willing and Cassie Hudnut; and several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Rosemary; son, Lonnie Carlin; two sisters, Wilma Smith and Ilene Stewart; and one brother, Clarence Carlin.
SERVICES: Graveside services and military honors will be 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 20, at the Durham Cemetery in Durham, with the Rev. Elmer Hagood conducting.
VISITATION: There will be no visitation but friends are invited to the committal services.
