Lena was born to Norwegian immigrants Lars and Eli Engen in Ishpeming, Michigan. She and her sisters moved to the Mesabi range of Minnesota to get jobs and there she met and married Archie C. Bragg.
Archie died very young from an accident at the mine and Lena and her three young children moved back to Ishpeming, Michigan to be with her parents. She remarried to Jens Ecklid in 1930.
Lena died of a heart attack at her mother's home. They were preparing a surprise party for Eli Engen and Lena suffered a heart attack as she entered the house. According to her daughter, Pearl Bragg Phillips, her last words were "take my coat off".
