The parish register indicates that John was a widower when he married Elizabeth Port in 1792. There are two sons listed in the baptism register for Poynings Holy Trinity in 806 with parents John Barber and Elizabeth - Henry and Richard. Whether they were twins and one was baptized earlier is unknown, but not so indicated in the register. It is also unknown whether there were two John and Elizabeth Barbers having children baptized in Poynings during the same time period, as might be indicated by the two Marys baptized in 1808. The hypothesis for two couples might also be explained by daughters Martha and Eliza both being born in the same year, 1810. However, Eliza is clearly the daughter of John Barber and Elizabeth Port as her burial record indicates she is the sister of Elizabeth Burtenshaw and John Barber, although John would be a half-brother.
