C. B. Farwell was a New England-descendant Chicago family man, businessman, political leader, and philanthropist who helped to found the town of Lake Forest in 1856-57 and then to relaunch the Collegiate Department of Lake Forest University in the 1870s. He was the institution's largest benefactor in the 19th C., contributing ca. $300,000.
US Congressman, US Senator. He was elected as a Republican to represent Illinois' 1st, then 3rd Congressional Districts in the USA House of Representatives, serving from 1871 to 1877, and from 1881 to 1883. When General John A. Logan, Senator from Illinois, died in office in 1886, Charles B. Farwell was appointed to serve Senator Logan's unexpired term, serving in the USA Senate from 1887 to 1891.
Four children, daughters Anna (De Koven), Rose (Chatfield-Taylor), and Grace (Dudley Winston d 1898, McGann) and one son, Walter.
