Jabes Harger is listed among the inhabitants of Stratford, Ct. March 28, 1668.

The Connecticut Colonial Records state he was made a freeman Aug. 7, 1669 in Stratford, Ct.

In 1675 Jabez Harger purchased a parcel of land from the Indian
Okenug. In 1668 Jabez Harger and John Hulls purchased a parcel of land from
Alexander Bryan called Peaquacs Plaine with a meadow called James Meadow.
At a Derby Town meeting in 1683 Jabez Harger was appointed to purchase
enough land from the Indians for a hamlet. He actually purchased more and
resigned his deed to the town after the town laid out his home lot to his
satisfaction. The town also granted the swamp land back to him to make up 2
acres. In drawing of lots, Abraham and Ebenezer had their portion of their father's estate in Derby bought
by their brother, Jabez. 1701/2.

Note: According to Samuel Orcutt, Jabez Harger was a Huguenot from New
Rochelle, NY. The Harger vertical at the Derby Historical Society contains
numerous editions of the Harger Family Newsletter. One of these claims that
Jabez Harger was indeed a Huguenot but that he originally settled in
Westchester, NY prior to coming to Connecticut.

[Tomlinson1 14] Margaret married Jabez Harger, a Huguenot from New Rochelle
NY. They settled in Stratford Ct where they resided 8-9 years and then removed
to Derby on Sentinel Hill, where he died in 1678. She died 17 March 1698. 9
children - Jabez Jr born after father's decease.

[Derby1] Settled in Derby in 1669 on Sentinal Hill east of Edward Riggs residence.

[NEGHR 27:63] Listed as an inhabitant of Stratford as of 27 March 1668, but not in 1650.

[Savage 2:356] He may have been called Hardier, if he first lived at Braintree
{seems unlikely - DEP}

[Stratford2 215] Jabez Harger had a houselot recorded to him in 1669 in
Stratford, but in the next year he settled in Derby where he died in 1678. He is
said to have been a Huguenot from Westchester NY but seems to have come to
Stratford in 1662, for in that year he married Margaret, the daughter of Henry
Tomlinson. During the few years he remained at Stratford he purchased a
number of pieces of land at Oronoke, one of which he purchased from the
Indians, on which one of his sons settled many years later.

Jabez Harger is a direct ancestor of Margaret Elaine "Lainie" Schneider (12 generations; great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-grandfather)
