AGED COMMUNITY
RESIDENT DIES
AFTER ILLNESS
-----
After long months of failing strength, Mrs. Elizabeth A. Hazen, the oldest resident of this community, passed away Monday morning, May 18, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Chas. T. Thornton on the Nine Mile road. Mrs. Hazen had reached her ninety-second birthday two weeks ago, May 3.

Elizabeth A. Young, the daughter of Christopher and Mary Young, was born May 3, 1844 in Ohio, and came to Michigan with her parents who were pioneers to this new territory. Both parents died when Elizabeth was a small child and her girlhood was spent in various temporary homes.

In 1865 she was married to Edwin Hazen and the new home was established near Farmington. Later the family moved to Novi where Mrs. Hazen took an active interest in the founding of the Methodist church and became a charter member. Her church was always dear to her heart and to it she gave of her strength until compelled by age to retire. Her hospitable home was always open to the pastors of her church. At her death she was the last surviving charter member. In her later years she became a member of the Northville Methodist church and was its oldest member.

Two daughters, Mae and Florence, were born to Mr. and Mrs. Hazen. In their childhood, these daughters were left fatherless by the death of Mr. Hazen in 1884. With fortitude Mrs. Hazen carried on with the raising of her family and trained then with unusual devotion.

The companionship between Mrs. Hazen and her daughter, Mrs. Florence Thornton, continued unbroken throughout the remaining years of the mother's life.

Surviving Mrs. Hazen are one daughter, Mrs. Thornton, one grandson, Chas. H. Thornton, two great-grandchildren, Nancy Kaye Thornton and Billy Edmundson, the latter of Mississippi.

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the Schrader Funeral parlor with her pastor, the Rev. H. J. Lord, officiating. Interment was made in the family lot in Novi.

Pall bearers were old friends Grant Putnam, Clyde Putname, L. J. Chapman and Jay Hazen.
