Dean C. Vernon, Sr., 69, died Friday, May 12, 2006, at his home in Carlsbad.

Mr. Vernon was born June 7, 1936, in Caney, Kan., to George W. and Maude Adcock Vernon. His family moved to Tucumcari in 1946, where he graduated from Tucumcari High School in 1955 and went to work for the State Highway Department.

Mr. Vernon married Patsy Johnston on Oct. 19, 1957, at the First Baptist Church in Tucumcari. Following their marriage the couple lived in Grants, then in Lubbock, Texas. In Lubbock, he worked as a milkman and for the Santa Fe Railroad. He attended the Lubbock Barber College, graduating in June of 1959 before moving to Carlsbad the following month.

Mr. Vernon worked for many years at the High School Barber Shop, then owned and operated the Carlsbad Barber Shop until July 2004. He was a member of Blodgett Street Baptist Church and the BPO Elks Chapter No. 1558.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a step-father, Orville Britton; three brothers, Frank, Ed, and Jesse; a sister, Martha Ross, and 14 half-brothers and sisters.

Survivors include his wife, Patsy Vernon; a son, Dean C. (wife Brigitte) Vernon Jr. of Carlsbad; two daughters, Kristie (Ed) Merkel of Carlsbad and Sonja (Randy) Chatfield of Carlsbad; a brother, Harold Vernon of Sierra Vista, Ariz.; a sister, Alpha Ross of Caney, Kan.; five granddaughters, Amber Willier, Stephanie Dobson, Deana Rogers, Joana Wells and Ashlyn Chatfield; five grandsons, Joseph Robinson, Bradley Davis, Brennan Davis, Lane Chatfield and Lanndan Chatfield and eight great-grandchildren.

Ed Merkel, Joseph Robinson, Randy CHATFIELD, Brian Dobson, Amber Willier, Deana Rogers and Raymond Wells served as pallbearers.

His grandchildren served as honorary pallbearers.
