Charles Elsworth Rorah and Abbie Cora Carter had 12 children, 9 children survived as shown in census documents. Surviving children were Pauline Merle (Otho Cecil) Downing, Gladys (Roy) Wells, Clyde Rorah, Alice E Rorah, Dessie Rorah, Dollie Rorah, Harry Lowery Rorah, Mabel Rorah, Josephine Rorah, and Laura Belle Rorah. My father knew his grandmother "Abbie" very well, as she spent every summer at the farm in Stuart Iowa. He rembered that Abbies mothers maiden name was Decker, and that led me to research the family a bit more. Here is what I found.
According to census documents, Abbies father was from Ohio, and her mother was from New York.
In the book "Henry County Illinois",found as a google book scan, there are the following statements.
"John Newton Carter (Son of William Carter and Margaret Jane Casebeer) was born in Ashland County, Ohio on January 12th 1839 shortly before the family moved to Stark County Illinois. He married Abigal Ann Decker in Cambridge County, Illinois on January 1st, 1857. John farmed in Burn Township and is listed in the 1865 state census for that area. John and Abigail had 9 children, Abigail, John, William, Sherman, Ada, Ella, Apoline and Maude Carter. John Newton Carter died in Galva Illinois on July 15th 1911.
