EMMAVILLE NEWS (Thu 12 May 1938)
Late Mr. P. T. Truscott
Death of Well-known Citizen
The death occurred at Gloucester House, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Sydney, on Saturday last of Mr. Percy Truscott, well-known citizen of Muswellbrook. News of the sad occurrence reached Muswellbrook shortly after 1 p.m., and was received with widespread expressions of regret. As a tribute to the memory of the deceased the competition arranged by the Golf Club for Saturday was cancelled (states Tuesday's Muswellbrook 'Chronicle').
Death followed a prolonged illness, which asserted itself shortly before last Christmas Day. Deceased had since been an inmate at Brentwood Hospital on two occasions, and recently left for Sydney for further treatment.
The late Mr. Truscott was the youngest son of the late Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Truscott, former well-known citizens of Emmaville. He completed his secondary education at Newington College, and afterwards graduated as a pharmaceutical chemist at the Sydney University. Deceased took up residence in Muswellbrook about 22 years ago, entering business on his own account, having purchased Mr. Andrews' practice, and had continued to carry on his profession with marked success until stricken down by illness in December last.
The late Mr. Truscott, who was 49 years of age, was held in high esteem by all sections of the community, the large number of people with His ever cheerful countenance and ready wit will certainly be missed by whom he had become associated in the course of his professional and public career. A heavy loss has not only been sustained by deceased's family, but those not endowed with a surfeit of the world's goods have lost a good friend, whose practice was always to help the sick in a practical way. 'Percy,' as he was known to most of us, had devoted his life to the welfare of many local activities, at the same time caring for the duties of a father in assisting the children in their chosen careers. His son, Mr. Maxwell Truscott, is at present in his final year at the Medical School at the Sydney University.
The late Mr. Truscott associated himself with almost every form of sport in Muswellbrook. His favourite game was golf, and the marked popularity of the game in the Upper Hunter owes much to the work and enthusiasm which he applied in its interests over many years. From the time he had taken up the game, golfers were wont to regard his pharmacy as a meeting place where they talked over their victories, or losses, on the field of play. The late Mr. Truscott had held the position of hon. treasurer, captain (A and B grade teams, and for the past four years had held the position of president, always carrying out the duties of the respective offices with conspicuous success. He was one of those who pioneered the establishment of turf greens here, giving Muswellbrook the distinction of being the only club north, of Singleton to possess a course of the character usually found in larger centres only. He had associated himself with the recent work of enlarging the club house. Deceased was a club delegate to the Hunter River Golf Association, and had assisted in the formation of the Upper Hunter Sub-Association. The passing of one who had played such a conspicuous role in the interests of his club and the game generally leaves a feeling of deep sorrow among golfers in every town from Newcastle to Tamworth ; but it is felt that the progress of the game and the evidences of his many works will always serve as a memorial to his worth. In other spheres of sport he was found to be taking an active part. He was president of the Bowman Park Cricket Club, and a vice-president of the Muswellbrook District Cricket Association, Football Club and Rifle Club. He was also a member of the Upper Hunter Amateur Race Club.
Deceased had entered the municipal Council on the occasion of the last triennial elections, and had rendered valuable service as a member of the various committees until ill-health precluded him from carrying on his aldermanic duties.
The late Mr. Truscott is survived by a widow and two children, namely, Mr. Maxwell Truscott (Sydney University), and Miss Meg Truscott (Muswellbrook). He is also survived by three brothers, Mr. James Truscott (Emmaville) , Mr. Sydney Truscott (Jandowie, Q.), and Mr. Thomas Truscott (Sydney) .
The funeral took place at Lidcombe cemetery on Sunday. Among the mourners at the graveside were Mr. Max Truscott, son; Mr. A. G. Short and Mr. George Stevens, brothers-in-law; Mr. Robert Stevens, nephew; Aldermen C. V. Parkinson and N. A. Halliday, representing the Muswellbrook Municipal Council; Mr. F. F. Smith, Mr. W. R. Nowland, Mr. T. B. Haydon, Mr. H. A. Duffin, representing the Muswellbrook Golf Club; and Mr. L. Wall who has. been associated with the late Mr. Truscott's practice for the past two years.
HOSPITAL BOARD'S TRIBUTE
Reference to the death of Mr. Percy Truscott was made at the last meeting of the Hospital Board, and a resolution of sympathy with the family was carried in silence. The secretary was instructed to convey to the family, the directors' sympathy in the great loss sustained by them.
