John could not have been born after 1753 as a male had to be 18 to marry.
John does not have to have been born in Hastings as he applied for a licence to reside in St Clements, Hastings on marriage. It is likely that he was resident in All Saints, Hastings as that is where he was married. Sarah Simmonds was from All Saints and perhaps he was not?
I now think he was from All Saints but they wanted to live near or with Sarah's brother Richard and his wife Hannah in St Clement's where R & H were married.
Have John's will dated 22 October 1795 and proved 3rd March 1798. Witness was Richard Simmonds and two others.
He leaves to his loving wife, Sarah, all my goods and chattels.
This Will was proved at London the third day of March in the year of our Lord one thousand and seven hundred and ninety eight before the worshipful John Sewell Doctor of Laws Surrogate of the Right Honourable Sir William Wynne Knight also Doctor of Laws Master Keeper or Commissary of the prerogative Court of Canterbury lawfully constituted by the Oath of John ????? the sole Executor named in the said will to whom Administration was granted of all and singular the Goods Chattels and Credits of the deceased having been first sworn duty to administer.
I, John Chatfield of the town and port of Hastings in the County of Sussex Mariner being of sound body and mind and good understanding hath made this my last Will and Testament - first (that is to say) I give and bequeath to my loving wife Sarah Chatfield during her natural life and widowhood all this my Tenement and Garden situated and being in the Parish of All Saints and my will is that for her to enjoy all my Goods and Chattels during her widowhood and after her demise. I give and bequeath to my four children John Chatfield and Sarah Chatfield and Eliz. Chatfield and Mary Ann Chatfield for them to share and share alike in all my Goods and Chattells what it may happen to be after my Wife's demise in paying all my Due Debts and Demands funeral Expenses and proving my Will. My will is that my wife Sarah Chatfield be my Executrix. My will is that my Son John Chatfield shall pay to each of his three sisters Sarah Chatfield and Eliz. Chatfield and Mary Ann Chatfield the sum of twenty pounds of good and lawful money of Great Britain out of this my freehold messuage whenever he enjoys it. My will is that if my Wife Sarah Chatfield be in want I give her my free will for her to mortgage this my Tenement for her support and this being the Reign of King George the third King of Great Britain France and Ireland King Defender of the faith etc. etc. etc. and in the thirty fifth of his Reign and this being written and signed by me October 22, 1795. John Chatfield. Witness and signed in the presence of us Sealed, Rob. Palmer, Mark Meadow, Richard Simmons.

Dear Family
After 25 years or more of searching I have found the will of John CHATFIELD abt 1839-1798, Mariner of Hastings, Sussex, England who is the 4th great grandfather of Martin Chatfield 1937 and Colin John Chatfield 1940.
Therefore it is the will of my brother Martin and my children's 5th great grandfather. Anne Marie 1962, Claire Mary 1963, Kevin John 1963, Paula Maria 1964, Teresa Margaret 1964, Dominic John 1966, Helen Margaret 1968, John Edward 1969,and Richard 1970
And our grandchildren's 6th great grandfather. John Robert 1982, Damian John 1984, Emily Charlotte 1988, Ian John 1988, Philippa 1989, Aston Stephen 1992, Maeve Elsie 1992, Tamsin Jane 1992, Breda Ruth 1994, Arcadia Sophie Constance 1995, Martha Rose 1996, Cadan Kofi 1998, Liam 1998, Ilan 1997, Yoav 2000, Asaf 2004,
And our great grandchildren's 7th great grandfather. Joshua 2000, Alexa 2007, Layla-Paige 2008 and Maya 2011.
It is interesting that Asaf was born after the previous generation of his cousins.
John was from Hastings in Sussex, England and he married Sarah Simmonds on the 7th October 1770 at All Saints Church in the old town. Sarah's parents were Richard and Mary and she had a brother Richard who married Hannah Edwards on the 4th November 1770. They must have been very close as John and Sarah applied for a licence to move near to them in the district of St Clement's, Hastings. I took Helen there in 1989 so that she could see where she came from. The area is medieval and most of the houses there are from the 1500's. A gem of English history.
When John made his will in 1795 he left everything to his loving wife, Sarah, everything she needed in widowhood. He also left to his four children Sarah 1774, Elizabeth 1776, John 1782 and Mary Ann 1784.
Elizabeth married William Breach and had 9 chilldren,
John married Mary Phillips and had 12 children of whom their 5th Henry 1810-1846 is from whom we are all descended.
Mary Anne was a black sheep and had several partners and children with the middle name of her lovers: George Austin Chatfield and separately Matilda CHATFIELD, she eventually married John Neale in 1822. I hope she was lucky with him.
PROBLEM - I still have not found out who John's parents were. It is possible that they were Thomas and Hannah but I cannot prove them.
