Former Syracuse resident Joseph "Lefty" Ponichtera, 78, died Monday in Clearwater, Fla.
A native of Syracuse, Mr. Ponichtera lived in Clearwater since 1980. He retired in 1990 after 43 years with Roth Brothers Smelting Co.
Mr. Ponichtera was a member of Sacred Heart Church in Syracuse. A Navy veteran of World War II, Mr. Ponichtera was a member of Syracuse Post 14, American Legion.
Surviving are his wife, Helen; five daughters, Arlene Hayes of Mattydale, Joanne Picciotti of Clearwater, Kathy Leslie of Toronto, Canada, Janet Mulcare of Dayton, Ohio, and Marianne Ricker of Liverpool; a son, Joseph of Westvale; a sister, Josephine Kelly of Solvay; 21 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be today in Clearwater. Memorial services will be conducted in Syracuse at a later date.
