From Baron to Battler
The story of Dr Christian Schrader and his family including the 1873 diary of Ludwig Schrader
This book by Caroline Gaden is the story of Dr Christian Ulrich Detlef Schrader and his family who arrived in Australia in 1853. It gives an insight into the family and their home in Denmark and Germany; it looks at their days in Port Macquarie; it looks at their close connections with the Waugh family; it follows the family to Walcha; it looks at what fortunes befell them when they left Walcha. Centrepiece to the story is the diary of second son Ludwig, written from 1873 to 1874. Ludwig's eloquent writings recount the battle to develop the farm, build a stone house at 'Holstein' near Walcha and cope with life in the bush. Incorporated into the story are brief local histories of some of the places where the family lived and the search for 'Montana, the home of Constanza and Phillip. Also included are extensive family trees and maps and photographs. The book is indexed and there are footnotes and endnotes where appropriate. Only a few copies of the book remain. The author Caroline Gaden is married to Dr Schrader's great great grandson. She has spent many years meticulously researching and documenting the family. She is a science graduate and has postgraduate Diplomas in both Education and Local and Applied History. Further details may be obtained by contacting the author by email at: cagaden@iprimus.com.au
